Magotho Campsite – Khwai Community Concession
Magotho Campsite is a popular destination located in the Khwai Community Concession (NG19), just outside the northern boundary of Moremi Game Reserve. Nestled under large camelthorn and leadwood trees along the Khwai River, the campsite offers excellent access to one of Botswana’s most rewarding wildlife areas, with easy game drives along the riverbanks and into the surrounding woodlands.
Unlike campsites inside Moremi, Magotho is community-run and managed by Khwai Development Trust (KDT).
Facilities at Magotho are basic but improving. There are designated camping areas with no electricity, and each stand has a fire pit. The campsite features shared ablution blocks with running water, flush toilets, and normal showers. Campers should still be mostly self-sufficient and bring all necessary supplies, including food and drinking water.
Bookings for Magotho are handled by the Khwai Development Trust and can be made via their website or through local booking agents.
Magotho is especially popular during the dry season (May–October), when wildlife gathers along the river. Expect frequent sightings of elephants, hippos, lions, leopards, and wild dogs, along with a variety of antelope and abundant birdlife.
One of the highlights for frequent visitors is the resident female leopard, known to us as “Smug Face”, but more widely referred to as the “Mogotlo leopard.” She is often spotted moving through the campsite in the early mornings and has earned a reputation for her calm demeanor and the distinctive smug expression that inspired her nickname.
Travel Tip: While not inside Moremi Game Reserve, a short drive through North Gate gives access to the reserve. However, park fees for Moremi still apply if you plan to enter. Magotho itself does not require park fees—only the campsite booking fee.
