South Gate Campsite – Moremi Game Reserve

South Gate Campsite is located just inside the southern entrance of Moremi Game Reserve, making it a convenient and strategic first stop for self-drive travelers entering the park. While some sources refer to it as Maqwee Campsite, most visitors and locals know it simply as South Gate. The campsite features around 10 individual stands, each with a basic clearing, some shade, a water tap, and a built-in braai (barbecue) area. Shared ablution blocks offer flush toilets and solar-powered hot showers. There is no electricity at the site, so guests should bring their own lighting and power banks. Firewood is occasionally available at the gate, but it’s best to bring your own. As an unfenced campsite within the reserve, South Gate allows for an immersive bush experience. Wildlife such as elephants, hyenas, and antelope often pass through or near the site, especially at night. Visitors are encouraged to exercise caution and respect the presence of wild animals. Moremi Game Reserve is considered one of Africa’s premier wildlife destinations, protecting part of the Okavango Delta and combining permanent water channels with dry woodland and savanna. The reserve is home to an incredible diversity of wildlife including lion, leopard, buffalo, giraffe, wild dog, and hundreds of bird species. South Gate is particularly well positioned for exploring the southern reaches of the park, including the Black Pools area, Xini Lagoon, and the scenic loops along the Moanatshira River. The campsite is managed by Kwalate Safaris, and bookings can be made through their website: www.kwalatesafaris.com.
